MASK HOLDER

GENERAL

Name: Jerónimo (Jeró) Valentino
Age: 27
Birthday: January 23 (Aquarius ♒)
Gender: Male
Affiliation: None / Neutral

PERSONALITY

Socialite
Jerónimo likes people. He likes people a lot. Growing up in one of the biggest cities in the world, he was surrounded by many different characters all the time. Whether they were tourists or residents, strangers or friends, Jeró liked talking to people, being with people, and just people overall. He’s the kind of person who can keep a conversation going usually, and is very laid back when speaking to people he doesn’t know to well. He offers a warm welcome, kind words, and open arms to any and all who may look for them, and does his very best to make sure he is well aware of everything that is going on at the time while keeping as unbiased of an opinion as he is able to on new subjects and whatnot. He exudes the presence of a genuinely good guy, and he’s rather happy about that. If you were to take social interaction away from him, and he would probably go mad. This guy is a people person – much like a domestic dog.

Leaps Before Looking
Although he likes people, Jeró happily acts as his own man. He makes his own decisions and acts on his own when he’s lacking a leader he feels as though he can put his faith in. This however, leads to some pretty bad decisions made on his part. As smart as Jeró is, he acts primarily on impulse – if something looks or sounds like a good idea at the time, he’ll do it. If it turns out badly, oh well, too late to turn back now! He has a tendency to keep a bright outlook on things if he does something really stupid, and he tries to mend what he breaks, but one of these days, Jeró’s impulsive decision making skills are going to land him in a heap of trouble. Hindsight is 20/20 sure, but how long can a guy live to HAVE hindsight? Jerónimo truly lives up to his name – say geronimo, jump in, ask questions later if you live to get the chance.

They Can't Be THAT Bad
It is also because of Jerónimo’s love of people that he is so easily fooled by them. He was taught at a young age never to pass harsh judgement onto something he did not completely understand. It wasn’t in his place to do so. Since then, Jerónimo has believed in the good inside everyone. There’s a light at the end of every tunnel. That’s what he thinks, at least. Jeró doesn’t think anyone in the world is 100% bad, and when faced with a less than desirable character, he will argue for the positive attributes they show rather than attacking the negatives. Jeró forgives and forgets easily, and when knocked down, he stands back up for more. He just doesn’t believe in the evils of human nature – or at least, he doesn’t believe that it would be enough to make someone want to do another any serious and long lasting harm – including himself. Jeró is the sort of guy that is blind to abuse, even when it’s brought down upon himself. He’ll keep coming back for more, for better or for worse, until death does he part.

Let Me Help You
Jeró’s one goal in life is to leave it a better place than it was when he first arrived. Most of this mentality was something influenced from his mother’s ideals, however, because of his experiences, he believes in it to a personal level as well. Jerónimo wants to help. He wants to be a good person, and he’s got his own way of going about doing that. Help. Everyone. No matter who they are, if they need him for something, he will do everything in his power to assist them so long as it doesn’t involve causing someone else problems – but that can be easily avoided with him, he’s so damn easy to manipulate, you could probably have him plant a bomb in an orphanage if you used the right words without him being any bit wiser about what that would actually do. Regardless, Jeró’s idea of a perfect world is where people are happy – and he has yet to really solidify it in his mind that it’s an impossible, idealistic dream. Still, if you need something, chances are Jerónimo is the guy you can ask anything from and he will find a way to help you out.

TL;DR: A literal puppy that you can kick as many times as you want as hard as you can and he will STILL come back to love you until you kick him hard enough to make him stay down for good.

HISTORY

Jerónimo was born to a Veteran Pokémon Trainer and a Pokémon Ranger in Lumios City, Kalos. He lived a very lavish life; his parents were wealthy, they had plenty of Pokémon to keep him interested, and he was a pretty good-looking kid with a well-rounded mind and so on and so forth. He had a younger sister, Rosario, who was born five years after him, and they were a tight bunch. He was close to his father growing up – the man taught his son all about Pokémon, and would talk about his journeys through the regions in his youth often. His little sister was easily Jerónimo’s best friend, as she never really got on his nerves or did any of those annoying sibling things you hear about because she wasn't an annoying sister. His mother though, was the person Jerónimo was closest to. She ruled the house with tender words and an iron fist. Being a Pokémon Ranger meant that she was unfortunately away a lot, yet she spent every moment that she could with her children – and Jerónimo absorbed everything she said. Blowing out someone else’s flame won’t make yours burn brighter mijo. Treat your Pokémon as you would your sister, mijo. All the advice and love she ever gave was locked up in Jerónimo’s mind, and contributed to him becoming who he is now. His job is his mother’s – help. Help people, help Pokémon – just be of help. All in all, Jerónimo seemingly had all he could want. However, something had begun to stick out in the boy more and more as he aged. His parents took notice, but did not begin to grow concerned over it until his high school career started. Jerónimo, the perfect golden boy of the neighborhood, had one thing about him that people could just not get past: he was gay.

Jerónimo had failed to display any interest in the opposite gender since ever. He had female friends, but nothing romantic ever came up between any of them. He appeared to edge away from girls who displayed that sort of interest in him. Originally people thought that he was just shy, but Jerónimo was a very outgoing boy, why the hell would that change over some feelings for another person? It wouldn't - and it was BECAUSE of the fact that Jerónimo was in no way shy about how he felt that people found out he was homosexual. It's sort of hard to miss when you hold hands with someone down the hall, or stop to talk to them whenever possible. Jerónimo and his 'friend' Sergio were on the same sports teams, sure, but that was not typical of team mates. None of it was, and boy did it cause Jerónimo a world of hurt. The discrimination was suffocating. His shining reputation was spat upon for that one part of his character. Jerónimo knew that people were looking for ways to drag him down. He had been preparing for it for years, and did what he could to ignore them and protect Sergio - who was not nearly as prepared as Jerónimo for the hatred. It actually worked for a while, but at Jerónimo's expense. He took the blows in place of Sergio, and did not prioritize things well - protecting the people he cared about in his life from the harshness of others became his main concern. Overall...he hurt himself because of that. It amazed him really, how one little itty bitty detail could cause so much chaos in his life. Did people just ignore his contributions to the community in favor of seeing something they found so wrong? Apparently so. Yet, the words of Jerónimo’s mother rang in his head, and he continued to do what he could to live a happy life and help those who needed him. In fact, this ordeal helped him develop an even stronger desire to be useful – he was never judged by those he helped. The Pokémon he looked after in shelters for volunteer work never hissed at him because of something so trivial. The people at the Pokémon Center didn’t care that he liked guys, they just cared that he was willing to be an extra pair of hands. He was happy where he was wanted, and he was happy where he was helpful.

However, there came a bit of a problem. His father was enraged with his son over what was happening. Jerónimo would often go home to wave after wave of uncensored criticism from his father. He was deeply hurt by this of course, as his father had been a very supportive figure before, teaching him about Pokémon and helping his son catch and train a good team. It was his father who was his first teacher, and he had been close to the man all his life. He had always been a positive influence on Jerónimo, but it seemed like those days were over. Jerónimo turned to his younger sister to assure her that everything was alright, and Rosario latched onto her brother. Nothing could damage her opinion of him, which was part of what got her so worked up. She had grown distraught with how their father had been treating her brother, and how her parents had stayed up late yelling at each other over the well-being of their son. Jerónimo's mother believed that her son was fine as he was - whereas his father believed that he had a sort of behavioral problem that tied in with his orientation that could somehow be corrected. As a result, Jerónimo's father sent his son away after he graduated high school. Jerónimo of course was upset by this, but there was nothing he could do. He couldn't bring himself to hate his father either. So, breaking it off with Sergio for the better of the both of them, and spending his last few days with his mother and sister, he was sent away to the Sinnoh region.

He went to a regional college, where he was put under even greater stress than before. Still, he took this as a challenge and quietly rebelled against his father, unashamed to admit that yes, he was homosexual, and no, that wasn’t changing. Jerónimo still made an effort to do as his mother had taught him to. He called his sister often, made friends at this new school of his, and seemed to build himself another life - ignoring of course the annoyances that came along. He used other activities as a means to distract himself and better his life. His primary focus was on groups in the school that acted as outreach programs, helping people and Pokémon in the area who needed it. He was happy again, as he was where he was needed and wanted. Jerónimo found a way to make it work. He trained himself to - he had to, his survival depended on it. College was hard yes, and it got progressively more difficult when he narrowed down his ideas of careers to the medical field, but he continued to do his volunteer work and get involved in helping the community however he could. That’s what made Jeró happy – living up to his mother’s expectations of him. People got over his gayness, and finally started to see what Jerónimo wanted them to – how much good he was able to do for others. Needless to say, it was well received.

Speaking of survival though, how about those earthquakes? The eruptions, the storms, the meteors came first, and then disaster was soon to follow...everything seemed to be blowing up in some part of the world. Jerónimo watched in relative safety the horrors that these disasters inflicted upon people. His heart was broken time and time again, seeing people pull the broken and dead from rubble of destroyed buildings and cities that were decimated completely by the odd occurrences. True to his nature, he wanted to help, and signed up to volunteer for relief organizations - one of which sent him and others in his school to provide direct help to those who had been harmed, along with a research team that hoped to discover anything that could have caused such abnormal activity. During one of these trips, he was shifting through the rubble to find survivors, when he found something. Buried beneath, was a mask. Odd-looking thing it was – a skull with curved horns. Still, it was a rather cool find - and he put it in his bag to protect it until he was done for the day. After dragging a few people out of the rubble and hearing the game plan from the organization's leader, Jerónimo went to the refugee camp made outside of the destroyed city - and he inspected what he'd found. It wasn't...damaged. Everything in that city had been damaged in some way, and yet this thing had been lying at the very bottom of a crater filled with debris, and somehow looked like it was brand new. That wasn't possible, was it? A mask of all things...completely scratch-free, while people and Pokémon alike lay dead in the same destruction.

Naturally though, since a mask is a mask, Jerónimo decided to try it on…and what he found changed everything.

The first thing that happened was easy. He looked in a mirror – and then stared for a good ten minutes or more, just looking at himself. He had horns. He had a TAIL. He’d seen something similar to this before. His father’s companion Pokémon had been one of these – a Houndoom. He remembered, looking at himself, what his parents had told him about the species. Fiery hot temper. Loyal to a fault. Powerful. Unpredictable. Wait…wait, there was something else. It sounded like someone was…talking to him. It sounded odd, really, and he didn’t know where it was coming from. It honestly frightened the man – only, when he opened his mouth to call out to the voice he heard, fire shot from his jaws instead of words. Ripping the Mask from his face, Jerónimo ran from his burning tent and waited for workers to put it out. He was in a state of shock meanwhile - it took a while for him to wrap his head around what he had become. What the Mask had made him become. He didn't wear it again for a while, as he decided that it would be a bad idea since he didn't know too much about the Mask itself yet. Life went on, and Jerónimo continued his work with the refugees - being put in charge of keeping the younger kids occupied with games like soccer and whatnot was tiring for him and everyone involved. Yet, he didn't have to wait all too long for answers about the object he had found.

The Missing Mask Merchant - an unidentified individual in the refugee camp - discovered who was responsible - or what was responsible - for the burned tent and confronted Jerónimo with an explanation and a choice. The opportunity to make a choice, at least. Factions had been organized...people with Masks like him were joining together for different reasons...and he could join a side - yet, he didn't want to. Looking at the destruction made by the coming of the Masks, Jerónimo concluded that it would be putting too much at risk to pick a faction and go to war for ideals he hardly knew anything about - but he kept the Mask for his personal use. He was going to stay on his own side. He had medical school to worry about, relief projects to partake in, other things that involved just HELPING people rather than potentially putting others in harm’s way for a weird costume prop that could turn people into half of a Pokémon. A policy of true neutrality was the key he chose to use - because really, is there such thing as a winning side in a war?
